Even though the Soviet Union collapsed only four months after the book appeared, The Greeks in the Black Sea continued to open up new pathways. It was perhaps only then that its usefulness became evident,, since it was the sole guide to the Black Sea as a whole. The chief accomplishment of the book were that it managed to reconcile us to the unfathomable past that has left indelible traces everywhere, and that it addressed many different peoples, worked on many levels and served as a reference point and a catalyst for the numerous initiatives that followed.
