Ο Frans de Waal γεννήθηκε στην Ολλανδία το 1948 και ζει στις ΗΠΑ από το 1981. Έλαβε διδακτορικό στη ζωολογία και την ηθολογία από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Ουτρέχτης και σήμερα διδάσκει ψυχολογία στο Yerkes National Primate Research Center του Πανεπιστημίου Έμορυ, στην Ατλάντα.
