Περιγραφή

The articles included in the present volume discuss aspects of the polis and the cosmopolis in relation to the problems posed in classical antiquity and in our global era.
In general the issues examined are referring to the concept of polis, politics and democracy in Plato and Aristotle (Fr. Arends, I. Deretic, B. Gruet, G. Koumakis, A. Larivee, F. Renaud, S. L. Sorgner, M. Vorwerk, R. Walthon and J. Wubnig), to the idea of eudaimonia in the polis (A. Lefka) and the cosmopolis and the religious foundation of polis (L. Castle). Two papers in particular make special reference to the philosophy of Socrates and to Socrates as understood in the age of cosmopolis and in the context of later Greek philosophy (H. Yamakawa, S. Yonezawa). In addition to the matters related to polis, the issue about the kind of democracy we might require in our era, i.e. in our technological age, is raised (G. Tsiantis).
The value of these papers is best appreciated when read in conjunction with the papers contained in the first volume on the Polis and Cosmopolis (IONIA PUBLICATIONS, ATHENS 2003)
As the editor of this volume published as a part of the series "Studies in Greek Philosophy", I would like to express my sincere thanks to the authors of the papers for their contribution.
I also wish to extend my appreciation to all those who assisted in the numerous tasks and labours associated with the publication of this volume.
