Τα Φινιστρίνια είναι στενά συνδεδεμένα με την Ελλάδα. Τα ποιήματα εκτυλίσσονται κατά τη διάρκεια ενός θαλάσσιου ταξιδιού που έγινε τον Ιούλιο του 1976 από τον Πειραιά προς τη Σάμο. Καθώς το πλοίο διέσχιζε αργά το Αιγαίο, ένας νεαρός άνδρας, κοιτάζοντας τη θάλασσα και τα νησιά μέσα απ' τα φινιστρίνια , πήρε μιαν απόφαση που θα άλλαζε οριστικά τη ζωή του. Σχεδόν τέσσερις δεκαετίες μετά, οι αναμνήσεις αυτού του καθοριστικού ταξιδιού επέστρεψαν με όλη τους τη δύναμη όταν εκείνος ο νέος, ο Αμερικανός συγγραφέας Τζων Τέυλορ, βρέθηκε μπροστά σε μια σειρά από πίνακες της Γαλλίδας εικαστικού Καρολίν Φρανσουά-Ρουμπινό. Πίνακες με φινιστρίνια που μέσα απ' τον κύκλο τους ξεπρόβαλε η θέα της γης και της θάλασσας και που η καλλιτέχνις δημιούργησε αφορμώμενη από τη συλλογή φινιστρινιών του αδερφού της που ζει στην Ελλάδα. Τότε ο Τζων Τέυλορ, μετέτρεψε τις αναμνήσεις σε μια ποιητική ακολουθία από διχοτομήσεις φωτός και σκοταδιού, παρουσίας κι εξαφάνισης, από ερωτήματα σχετικά με τα μονοπάτια μεταξύ εσωτερικών και εξωτερικών κόσμων - τα φινιστρίνια.

This book has an intimate connection to Greece. The setting of the poems is a ferryboat trip, made in July 1976, from Piraeus to the island of Samos. As the ferryboat slowly crossed the Aegean and while a young man was looking out of the portholes at the sea and the islands, he made a decision that would change his life. When nearly four decades later the young man, the American writer John Taylor, met the French artist Caroline Francois-Rubino, he learned that she had devoted a series of paintings to several Greek portholes that had been collected by her brother, who lives in Greece. She had also been inspired as an artist by the vision of the land and the sea through the circle of the portholes. While John Taylor was examining her paintings, his memories of this decisive voyage returned in all their force. He then wrote this poetic sequence, with its dichotomies of light and darkness, of presence and disappearance, with its questions about the passageways -the portholes- between inner and outer worlds.
